First impressions- EmilyC

So far, I love this book!  The letters add to Charlie's unique perspective and inner thoughts on life and high school.  He is NOT self conscious and does not care about what others think.  Some of the things he says are graphic, such as talking about and drugs, sex, and masturbation openly.  He also does not care about protecting the confidentiality of the people he is telling stories about.  Although I do not know who these letters are being sent to, many people could get into serious trouble if these stories are exposed.  (My prediction is that these letters are going to the girl who was raped in front of Charlie in his bedroom)  His sister's abusive boyfriend could have gotten into serious trouble before he was exposed by Charlie (25), Bob could get into trouble for using drugs and offering someone a pot brownie in disguise (34) , and "Nothing" and Sam could get into trouble for driving while standing (38).

  1. The main question I have about the book was are these letters being sent to an actual person? He mentions that "you are older so you must know" quite a few times but at the same time he never gets responses or talks about sending them its just he sits down and writes. Is he possibly writing letters to store away and one day open when he's older?

  3. I totally agree! I love how open he is with his writing, and I'm eager to know the names and see if they have a major significance or not to the rest of the book. I also love your prediction for who the letters are being written to because I would not have predicted or thought that.

  4. ^^^ But I'm not exactly sure who I would predict at this point.

  5. People often compare Charlie with Holden. What do you think of that comparison?

  7. Holden and Charlie are similar characters! They both treat the reader like they do not care about their opinion, yet they also write that they are getting too personal or act embarrassed about how they handle situations. For example, Holden is both proud and embarrassed of his hunting hat. Charlie is open, yet cautious, when he talks about loving Sam and sex. They are both in the middle of an important transition from childhood to adulthood and are struggling with depression from this transition.

  9. I think the biggest difference between the books is how likable the main character is. I love Charlie, and really want to know how his story turns out. I was curious about Holden, and related to him on some things, but he really isn't someone I would want to hang out with. Perhaps Holden is more interesting because he's less likable, but I thought that Charlie was a far better protagonist, but I do see some similarities and totally agree with the ones Emily mentioned.

  10. The main similarity I see between Charlie and Holden is the writing style because both are writing to someone expecting that it will be read. I see more differences than similarities however. Holden writes what he thinks but does another thing, yet Charlie writes what he thinks and goes through with it. For example, he has a naughty dream about Sam and feels ashamed. He later tells Sam about it. If it were Holden, he would never do that. He would just keep that to himself. Also, Holden is more bold and brash whereas Charlie is the opposite. He keeps to himself.
